The Why & How of Adam & Eve

There are some amazing resources out there to help us understand men, women, and relationships. However, I have found the most helpful resource to really grasp the intention of God’s heart for relationships (and ultimately, marriage), is The Ultimate Life Guide–that is the Holy Bible. It is here that we begin to understand God's heart in creation. We can also see the intention of relationships through God’s Divine matchmaking abilities.

This blog is Part 1 of the Relationship Series. Stay tuned each Monday for subsequent blogs.

Isn’t it interesting that God didn’t create the Adam & Eve in the same way? Let’s rewind to the beginning and take a look at the creation story of Adam and Eve:

{The WHY & HOW of Adam}

(Genesis 2:5-6) Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth and no plant had yet sprung up, for the Lord God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no one to work the ground, but streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground.

The Why = To reveal His character and likeness on earth

(Genesis 2:7THEN the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.

The How = From Dust

Embracing the fact that Adam and Eve were created differently may disrupt our worldview that men and women were created equal. However, if we push past a possible disruptive feeling and seek to understand God’s intention behind the creation of the first man and woman we will open up to a greater level of understanding about the beautiful interdependence between male and female.

{The WHY & HOW of Eve}

Eve, however was created FOR Adam as we can see in  Genesis 2:18“It is not good for the man to be alone. I shall create a suitable helper for him.”

The Why = For Adam

She was also created FROM Adam as described in Genesis 20:21-22“So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.”

The How = From Adam

Throughout Scripture we can see God’s beautiful love story unfold. Therefore, as men and women, we ought to trust that God is the Ultimate Matchmaker and surrender our hearts to His perfect plan and timing.

  • Men: Do you trust that God loves you so much that He made (prepared, fashioned, appointed) a suitable helper for you?
  • Women: Will you accept that God is developing you into the suitable helper for your (future) spouse? Will you trust that, in His perfect timing, God will place you in the path of your “Adam”?

Whether you’re walking through the season of singleness, or you’re in a relationship and trying to navigate how to effectively do so in a God-glorifying way, I believe we can all turn to the Word of God and learn everything we need about modeling God-glorifying relationships. After all, He is the Author of Love and the Creator of marriage!
