#FridayFaves | Old Testament Story

n today's edition of #FridayFaves, I share one of my favorite OT stories.

I can't tell you how many times people have been super honest with me about their challenges with consistent bible reading. Maybe you experience the same challenges:

  1. It can be difficult to understand (lots of hard to pronounce words, lineage and history)

  2. It can be difficult to relate to our modern day lives.

Hey, I totally get it. Listen, I felt that way too. Don't feel discouraged if bible reading isn't fully your jam (yet). It's not like any of us popped out of the womb knowing how to thumb through the scriptures and with full understanding of it's contents. Even doctorate-level theologians had to start the same way we all do. And let me just say, if you struggle with getting excited about diving into the OT because you think it's boring...stick with me, I'll help break it open in a way that  you'll develop an insatiable hunger ignited by the Holy Spirit and you will likely become a #NerdoftheWord too! :)

Are Dreams from God?

Have you ever wondered if your dreams are from God?

As I draw in closer to God and study His Word and understand His majesty and sovereignty, I am a firm believer that dreams and visions are in fact a powerful communication method between God and us. Sometimes dreams are literal, sometimes they are symbolic and we know this when we study the scriptures.

Every time dreams are mentioned in scripture, they’re always a message from God. Not one time are we given an example of a dream that is NOT from God. So then, why do we question our dreams or feel like they’re completely unrelated to God communicating with us?

The Bachelor{ette}

I was a Bachelor/Bachelorette ADDICT! I loved grabbing a glass of wine and watching from the first episode where the contestants exit the limousine and meander up to the "Chosen One" and go to ridiculous extremes to captivate their attention and stand out from the crowd of the 30 others doing the same thing.

It was escapism for me lusting after an edited version of romance. An experience most of us will never get to experience in real life. The show is created to capture the viewer into the drama and after awhile we begin to develop harsh opinions, judgments, criticisms, as we pick our favorite contestants and begin to despise the unmistakable "villain." It's like an equivalent of a fantasy football league as we watch who gets roses and who gets sent home ugly crying with mascara and boogers streaming down their faces.

Until Holy Spirit spoke to my heart one night:

"Heather, why do you watch this garbage when it's so far outside of what you know I created marriage to be? I'm not in this. Why do you consider this 'entertainment?'"

The Crown

1. We are NEW Creations:

It’s a charge for us all to understand that once we accept Jesus as Savior AND Lord, we are given a new identity (2 Corinthians 5:17).

2. We are of ROYAL descent:

Scripture tells us in Romans 8:17 that we are coheirs with Christ and that we are seated in Heavenly places (Ephesians 1:20 & 2:6).

3. We must LEAD first with KINGDOM values

We are held responsible for representing Christ and are to lead “above reproach” (1 Timothy 3:2). That means we must take careful measures in order to protect our Father's name, revere the blood shed for our sake and operate in the grace given to us with honor.

Hurting Hearts in a Bar

When I'm out and about I often make great connections with strangers and it's not uncommon for people to open up to me about personal details of their lives. I honor these Divine encounters because I know that as ambassadors of Christ, we are always on assignment. He will orchestrate an appointment to reach the lost and hurting and He wants to use us to be a messenger for His glory.

I used alcohol to help me forget about the pain. My drunken laughter covered up the cries. Getting attention from men boosted my fractured confidence of a broken heart. It was addicting to feel wanted. Even though they didn’t really want ME...they wanted a taste of passion and excitement to satisfy their fleshly desire for a moment.

I Said "YES!"

Today is a marker day in my life story.
I said "YES" to God in a whole new way today. I've been called. He's been speaking to me, showing me big vision...and I've been running. Stuttering like Moses, full of excuses. Full of fear. It hasn't mattered how many times I've read the hall of faith in Hebrews 11, I've still convinced myself I'm not worthy. And truth is, I'm not. Who is?! I've played it safe for too long- tried to live a comfortable, "normal" life. Trying to earn respect and credibility from the wrong people, the few people that misunderstand me while discrediting the ones God has put in my life that constantly remind me the truth of Gods promises over my life. Things continually get flipped upside down and sideways and I keep going back to what I know because it's conventional, it's the "responsible" way of life...and it's been sucking my spirit of joy and purpose. He wants more out of me. And now, I want to give it to Him. All of it. I don't want a conventional life. I'm okay with discomfort. I'm okay with not fitting in with the negative naysayers. I want to offer my life as a living sacrifice as Paul wrote to the Romans in chapter 12....
Bottom line:
I CANT NOT.
